Choosing a Doctor-talking about him

Over on Yahoo Health, Dr. Simeon Margolis M.D./Ph.D. wrote about choosing a doctor. Dr. Margolis quoted an article published in the Archives of Internal Medicine about physician mistakes. His take on the article was that a physician could have a big impact positive or negative on your life.

I found his advice a little confusing. It wasn’t clear what criteria you could use to choose a competent physician. His final comment was that even with his help to choose a physician, his brother probably didn’t know if his doctor’s care was good or bad.

I disagree with that. People are not stupid about other people. You usually have an idea of whether or not someone is giving you their full attention. I think in addition to evaluating an M.D.s training there are other things you can do to help yourself choose a good physician. I wrote those tips as a comment on Dr. Margolis’ blog post here. Mine is the first comment on this article so it is easy to find. I would appreciate your comments on experiences in finding a new physician. One thing I left out is getting a recommendation by the M.D. you are leaving, assuming it because of a move and not dissatisfaction.
