The Motivation to take Action

challengessign.jpg When you are changing from a sedentary lifestyle to and active one, how do you find the motivation? What will allow you to start and maintain increased activity?

One thing to remember is you need more than one motivator, more than one reason to do more than you do now. Multi-motives - the sum of all the reasons for change. You develop your list when you get to the stage of preparation. First you acknowledge you have a problem, then you think about it and finally you do something. You develop a list of things to do and reasons to do them.

In an article entitled Developing Mental Toughness for Permanent Weight Loss the author a physician and person who lost 60 pounds is unidentified. In the article the author suggests asking yourself several questions:

hourglasstimer.jpg

  • Why have I failed to change in the past? -lack of time -lack of motivation
  • What will I miss if I remain the same weight? -relationships? -good health?
  • What bad things are associated with being overweight or obese? -early death -diabetes and other illnesses -unable to do things with other active friends and family
  • What else would you like to do? -Take a walking tour of a favorite city -Run in a 5K race play a favorite sport -Join an exercise group

Tony Robbins said,”If you want to succeed in any aspect of life, find someone who has already succeeded in that area, and do what they did to get there.”

Another suggestion from this Physician Author is:

Hire a wellness coach. You hire a CPA to help you with your taxes. You hire an attorney to help you with legal issues. You hire a real estate agent to help you buy a house. But, what do most people do when they want to lose weight? They buy a book and try to do it by themselves. I already mentioned that obesity is a killer, and you already know how difficult it is to lose weight, so hire a professional. But what is a professional? Sure you can go down to your local gym and hire a personal trainer, but what makes them a professional? Just because someone may have played high school football, does not mean they help you with losing weight.Obesity is a disease, and you need to treat it as a disease. So hire someone who can order blood test, work with you mentally on changing your habits. Hire someone who can develop an exercise and nutrition program specifically to your needs and abilities. A wellness coach will be with you through the good and the bad.

He has some other suggestions beneficial to the person in the action or maintenance stage like

Write down your goals

Visualize achieving your goals

I would add to these

Write yourself an advertisement - sell your attitude and desires to yourself.

homework.jpg Never give up. If you climb up a vertical surface you don’t just go, you study it, learn the routes others took up to the top, decide on one yourself, assemble the gear, and go with or hire an expert to go with you the first few times at least. This level of preparation and commitment increases your chance of success and decreases your chance of failure. Even then there may be the unpredictable things, high winds, rain, ice an injury in training that may postpone your climb but can never stop it forever. Plan, prepare then overcome the final obstacles in some way. You can decide how but don’t let their occurrence stop you.

If you need advice from a Wellness Coach, I can help you or help you to find someone you can work with, just let me know.
