Ha! I always laugh when people talk about "colon/intestinal cleansing" ... "Oh, John Wayne had 50 lbs of undigested food in his gut when he died..." is the old wive's tale. That is not exactly possible, the intestines regenerate their tissue about every 30 days or so, shedding the outer layers (which is actually the "inside" layer of the intestines). Just eating enough roughage will do the trick - in fact if you get enough fiber you can actually decrease the amount of calories absorbed by your food (At least a percentage point or two) because it gets pushed through the system so fast.

I just learned of Bruce's website today. What a great idea! We all want to be fit (well most of us). The first thing I did was go through my kitchen cabinets and throw away all of the junk. Then I went to the market and purchased only fresh fruit and veggies. My plan is to walk at least a mile each day. I also need to work on stress reduction. I do not have work stress, but my family causes me a great deal of stress that I can do little about. Thanks Bruce for this great site! You are a nice guy.

Eating fresh vegetables (and fruit, for the non-diabetic) along with pure water and daily exercise are fundamental. Also there is benefit in the occasional fast, especially for those who tend to be overweight. A 3-day fast (with plenty of liquids) is a good tonic to re-energize the system. Some have fasted up to six weeks for a major weight-loss and detoxification program with good results.

Excellent information here. I do feel much better when I do a lemon water cleanse for one or two days every couple of months. Are you familiar with The China Study by T. Colin Campbell? I eat almost no animal protein these days and elimated dairy from my diet several years ago.

In a world gone mad with dieting and exercise nuttiness, this was great. I agree. I find that I keep clean and green by eating veggies, tons of them. A huge salad does the trick. Every other crazy thing I've ever tried has been wasted effort. Great blog, Bruce.

Donna, Thanks for your comment and good for you for taking off 25 pounds of unwanted weight. High fiber in your diet is a big aid to this in several ways. High protein is good as long as it isn't over 30% of your total calories. It causes a mild diuresis, or loss of water and can actually cause dehydration more quickly as we exercise in warm months. This takes nothing away from the desire, discipline and action you took to improve your health. Now complement that weight loss with increased activity to improve bone health, heart health and brain health.

This may be a late comment on the subject of fiber but I found a great cereal All Bran Strawberry Medley. Taste great not like wood and the berries are great.

I eat it for lunch and night time snack. Arnolds Whole Grains double fiber bread is good too, has 5 grams of fiber per slice. The All Bran per cup has 10 grams.
