Fitness, Fatness and Cancer Risk
Stephen Farrell Ph.D. of the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas was the lead investigator in a study about how fitness affects death from cancer.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the USA.
What did the study conclude?
Lean fit men (Men were the subjects in this study) were less likely to die of cancer but another interesting fact was that men in every fat category who were also fit were also less likely to suffer a death from cancer. It is possible to be fit and fat? Well, yes. You can have good oxygen utilization while carrying excess body-fat.
What does this mean to me?
People often discourage themselves. They say things like no matter what I do it doesn’t matter. I will always be “this way” meant in a negative connotation. It is no use, my body will never change.
Here is what matters, every well day above ground. If you can dress, eat, feed yourself and do something useful for yourself and others then things are good. You can help yourself avoid death from cancer by becoming more fit.
Most of us are not going to look like our favorite movie star. I like Brad Pitt as an actor, though I will never look like him no matter what I do. I can be fit though and I can improve my chance of receiving more hugs from my grandchildren by becoming more fit. (More hugs = more years alive.)
How do I start?
Well, quit saying you can’t. Start saying, “This is what I want to do,________________.” Now fill in the blank with some exercise you desire. I love to walk so I took Nordic walking lessons. You use poles and walk fast. That’s not for everyone but it is for me. What’s for you? Do something that increases your heart rate and your breathing a little. It should make you tired but not hurt or exhaust you. You should do it 3 or more times a week for 30 minutes. One regular hour of exercise a day decreases your mortality from all causes by 50%.
Remember to say encouraging words to yourself.
If you live in America and can read this, you are doing OK. Eat some good food, but just enough and if you are overweight, not quite enough. Take a little walk, find pleasure in work and not food, count your blessings, be grateful, say kind words to others, forgive stupid drivers.
Why am I writing this? To help you work on your attitude. It is determined by your words, and reinforced over an over to yourself. If you are angry and impatient with others you will be with yourself also. Be patient and kind to you and to others. Don’t be a doormat but don’t be irritable and critical always either.
Give others and yourself the benefit of the doubt, and move on to better achievements. No matter how it has been, it can be better if you say it will be over and over and then act on those words.
Start to act as if, and soon it will be. Start small, and be consistent. You can be here long and healthy and happy. No one wants to stay or to fight for what they always criticize and do not value.
Value your life, act as if it is valuable and take good care of it. As you do you will reap many different kinds of crops, and one will be increased fitness and a decrease in the risk of death from cancer.
Need some help?
Here is an opportunity for 5 of my readers. I am starting some podcasts on how to change a habit. Could be to quit smoking, start exercising, eat better, talk better or something else.
If you would like to be coached and can’t afford the $60 per hour I will coach 5 people for 5 hours each (minimum free number) but there is a small cost ($300 value).
I want to do it on a live talk show that will be recorded. You have to agree to “show up” that is to call in at the scheduled time, talk to me and allow me to coach you. You don’t have to reveal your name or location to listeners but you do have to be honest about your efforts, follow through and actual progress. It would be very beneficial to everyone and you get my service free.
This offer is open for 4 weeks. Use the email on my blog to contact me and tell me why you want me to accept you as a free client. I will choose 5 people and then start. If no one takes me up then I will have guest speakers and other experts on my “Get the Skinney” podcast show. I will be recording the sessions directly on my computer using Skype and Pamela for Skype.
I hope to hear from you.

Hi Bruce,
That’s very true, negative affirmations will give you negative results!

@Karooch, I am looking forward to doing what I can. If you know someone who needs some help, I am on skype so they don’t have to live in the USA.
@ JoLynn You are so right. What do you teach your listeners and readers?

it’s true. It’s not just about looking like a celebrity or something. But it’s feeling good about ourselves, in and out…. A lot of people don’t know how beneficial doing regular exercise can be. It reduces stress and makes me sleep well…Very informative post
