A Diet For a Healthy Brain

A healthy brain isn’t an accident. It is due to genetics, some luck

( no concussions etc…), a good diet and regular exercise.

I am going to do 2 things I don’t usually do.
brain.jpgFirst I am going to divide this post so you will have to click the read more link to finish the article and I am going to commit blog suicide and send you away before I have you click through so do return please and finish the article.

So, lets first test your knowledge of a good brain diet. I am going to send you to Web MD and have you take a 7 question brain nutrition test. I got 6 out of 7 right. I will tell you which one I missed in the second half. OK, click on the WebMD link and then back you come after the test. Back now are you. Great! I missed number 7. I thought is was Ligonberries. How did you do? Do leave a comment and let me know.

What is a healthy brain diet? It should include enough of the right fats - omega 3s from fish and nuts, also just a little saturated fat and NO Trans-fats! It should also have enough lean protein, lots of water, and plenty of antioxidants. Your brain prefers glucose as a fuel. You need to eat regular small amounts of complex carbohydrates to give the brain a steady source of glucose. Eating the carbohydrates in their natural state gives you lots of fiber which will take out the sugar spikes and regulate the sugar in your blood and brain.

What kinds of food should you eat? Oats and other whole grains, nuts, flax seeds and oil, all kinds of fruits and vegetables and a little lean meat and other protein sources like whole eggs. Drink a couple of liters of water each day and go easy on caffeine. Avoid nicotine and go very light on alcohol. Keep the calories to just what you need to maintain your ideal body weight. I will have some fun foods to eat in my next nutrition article.

Want some good references? I will have a white paper for you on this subject and will be reviewing two books soon also - Spark by John Ratey M.D. and The Brain Trust Program by Larry McCleary M.D.

Look for the white paper sign up soon but until then, tell me how your diet and exercise plan are for your brain. I want to hear and I would love to answer some questions. The only dumb question is the one you do not ask. Ask it in the comments so I can help not only you but also the person who wanted to ask but was afraid. Thanks so much. Be back once or twice more this week.

  1. I missed no: 2 and 5. The girls in my office liked the nutrition blogs and learning about cholestol, stress, BP how to controll things like that with diet and exercise.

how about a question and answer blog and how to treat minor illness with out seeing a doc or when you should go see one.

  2. What a way to start the day! I got a “few” right!! Remember I had nutrition couses in college 55 years ago. Give me a break, dear!!However, never to late to learn!!! Thanks
