Bruce,
Excellent podcast piece on Dr John Ratey regarding his new book “Spark.” Your comments are spot on. I also admire Dr Ratey’s work, - his excellent review of the science regarding brain function, depression, and other *mental unhealth* related problems with diminished exercise. Spark is a must read for all of your readers, with excellent science hooking up recovery and brain progress with exercise.
As a fellow psychiatrist and neuroscientist, I am particularly interested in the demonstrable increase of BDNF, a natural brain fertilizer, that helps brain cells grow better following exercise. We have been aware of BDNF as related to antidepressant drugs, helping brain cells grow in rats, so it is very interesting in this day of neuroplasticity and brain rehab to read his interesting report.
You will get a kick out of my favorite term, one to spring on your friends Saturday nite: *neurodendritic rearborization* - which is enhanced by BDNF and consistent exercise.
I regularly recommend his book for my own patients and see considerable value when combined with basics like a protein breakfast and appropriate supplements [e.g. D3] which you discuss so well elsewhere here.
Keep up the excellent work, enjoyed hearing your comments on D3 the other night on the teleconference,
Best,
Chuck
