Your Home Exercise Plan - what Equipment do you need

Home exercise equipment is a huge market. People often have a spasm of enthusiasm for exercise and then buy something only to have it become a great garage sale find or expensive valet. If you want to look better naked, do you need equipment?

The answer to this depends upon who you ask. A fellow who came to my high school in the 60’s promoting Yoga as a way to stay in shape, showed us how to get in shape and stay in shape using only our body weight. Others spend thousands to outfit a home gym with all the best treadmills, weights and machines. What do you need?

If you are new to exercise and have not done much or less in a long time ( over 6 months) you don’t need much equipment. Anything you do regularly will yield you good results. Your main concern is to not get a repetitive motion injury or to start doing too much too fast.

I suggest a walking program. All you need are good shoes. Get fitted for them by someone who knows what they are doing. I go to FleetFeet here. It is a chain and is found in many medium sized cities. The right shoe fitted to your gait will keep you out of trouble. Indoors you need a yoga mat and a good yoga video - I recommend Beth Shaw and Yoga Fit - and a stability disc. Stability and core fitness along with improving aerobic fitness should be your focus initially. Richard Bradley’s Quick Fit is a favorite of mine also.
Getting advice from a good personal trainer - there are two articles on the blog about this - is your next step. Below I have listed some resources. If you buy them I get a small percentage. About enough to buy a black medium coffee at Starbucks.

Here are links to the things I recommend.
