Radioactive Kitchen Counters
This thought flabbergasted me, but apparently it is possible. Dr. W J Llope of Rice University in Houston is a physics professor. He tested a number of granite counter tops for the presence of uranium radiation. It isn’t clear how or why he started to do this. He does not seem to have a axe to grind with the granite or construction industry.
He found that some pieces of granite used as kitchen counter tops contained enough uranium to emit 1 rem of radiation every 10 days. One rem is described as enough radiation to cause cancer in 4 of 10,000 people exposed to this dose.
If you have these counter tops and want to know if yours is radioactive, you can do this with a home kit to check for radon gas. Because hot spots may be scattered, several kits used in parallel may be needed.
Dr. Llope has a web site he has not updated since 5/08 but it does contain information on this topic. More information on radiation is available from the CDC.
