Sexually Transmitted Diseases - are you at risk

No one who understands sexually transmitted diseases wants one. Yet, every year millions of Americans of all ages are treated for STDs. I have treated people from teenage years to those in their mid to late 60s for STDs.

What are the common STDs?

The common bacterial infections are Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and Chlamydia.

The common viral infections are Herpes simplex types 1 and 2 (HSV), Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Other diseases that can be acquired by sexual contact are Bacterial Vaginosis, Hepatitis B, LGV and Trichomoniasis.

The key to prevention is know your partner. Most STDs can be detected even if they are asymptomatic except HPV. There is no test to confirm someone does not have HPV. Since HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer and occasional cancer of the penis, it is one to discuss with a potential sexual partner.

I have linked the names of these various infectious diseases to their page at the CDC for you to be able to read more. Essentially, the viral STDs are for life and HIV kills you eventually. Most bacterial STDs can be treated, but resistance to antibiotics is increasing and eventually we may be talking about resistant Gonorrhea or Chlamydia like we do resistant Staph infections (MRSA).

The thing to know is you can get it and from someone you know and trust. Take the proper precautions, avoid alcohol in new relationships - it lowers inhibitions, have yourself and your lover tested and see the written results for your self.

On a TV show years ago called NYPD Blue the first scene was always a briefing that always ended with the person giving the briefing saying the same thing. I will pass his advice on to you.

“Lets be careful out there today people!”
