Phthalates

I had never heard of phthalates until I read a blog article by Violet Blue. She is a sex educator in San Francisco who was writing about unsafe sex toys. Phthalates are just one problem in the issue of what chemicals are safe for use with humans?

The concern over the use of these plastic softeners has been brewing for several years. Recent reports that they leach out of bottles that are used for water and for babies to drink milk has raised concerns about safety. They are used in may products intended for use in the mouths of infants for feeding, teething and for play.

President Bush signed a bill that will supposedly eliminate phthalates from children’s toys and eating utensils and bottles. The skeptic in me says either it allows the industry to self regulate this practice or that it lacks teeth in some other way. Bush has never done anything to hamper an industry from making as much money as possible.

I think elimination of phthalates from many types of products is a good thing and the best way to get it done is to not buy the products that contain them. If the products are not stocked in Walmart and Target, they aren’t going to be produced.
