HPV Vaccine - Effective or Not
I assume as I write this that you do not read the New England Journal of Medicine. I confess that I am not a cover to cover reader either. I receive it electronically and and read articles that deal with wellness and issues dealing with public health.
Two articles, one an editorial and an article reviewing the health and economic implications of HPV in the USA were published. The first was an editorial review of the second. The second was a report about the findings of a mathematical model developed by the Harvard School of Public Health to analyze the scenario needed to the use of the HPV vaccines to be effective.
The editorial described the findings as “optimistic” regarding their base-case assumptions. For the vaccine to be effective requires many variables that we have no data about to all fall perfectly into place. Some of the data we do have indicate a less than perfect outcome for all the circumstances needed for cost-effectiveness.
I have written an article on this topic and posted it on EzineArticles where I am listed as an expert author in health and fitness categories.

It should NOT be mandatory. Useful on only about 70% of the HPV viruses. Has many side effects already recorded (8,000 cases), including death. Better to die of cancer at age 50 than to die at age 15 from a vaccine. People should be able to choose their own health care (or not) and that of their children, too. The government is not our mother; we are capable of making our own decisions regarding health care, insurance and vaccinations. Thanks for the opportunity to voice my thoughts.

As I understand it, the cost is $300 per girl for the vaccine. That makes the “economic implications” for the drug manufacturer and developer very nice, indeed. For a favorable article in a medical journal, there is always the question of who the author was, and what relationship they had to the drug company. Bruce, you did a really nice job on your ezine article, especially when you pointed out that most women will clear the HPV on their own within two years, if they get it.
