John McCain and Barack Obama can teach us 5 things about how to lose Weight
McCain and Obama, the two presidential candidates can teach us 5 things about weight loss. I will break this into two sections, first; the 5 things they can teach us and second: how we can apply those lessons.
The 5 things they can teach us:
1. A candidate for any office has to make a decision to run and to do what ever it takes. This is a goal - to do certain actions for a certain period of time to obtain a certain result. If they are defeated - not enough money they have to quit temporarily but a politician is never going to cease doing what they do best - get people to give them money to get elected so they can set policies that benefit their contributors.
2. The candidates don’t try to do it all by themselves. They get the best advisors and make the best plan that they can make. Then they adjust that plan only if needed to continue to make progress on their decision/goal.
3. Each candidate is disciplined and committed. If they did not have and display these qualities no one would vote for them. They show up and do the things planned for that day. You can bet they keep track of their results too. For politicians the record of results before the election is called a poll, but the ultimate record is the count of votes.
4. Each candidate works hard. I went to a fund raiser for a large ministry in the United States. You know this person as he is on TV regularly. He must have been working hard since he could not remember what had happened where. They were on a whirl wind tour and the only thing he focused on was his job, not where he was or what day he was there. Candidates have people prepping them but you can bet they have thin memories for where things happened and on what day. They do what it takes.
5. Candidates are extremely positive about themselves, their contribution, their potential when elected. They talk positive talk all the time. Now this inflated self talk is derided in the candidate we don’t support and accepted as the TRUTH in the one we do support. When they have no record, but are seeking the office the first time, then it is our belief in what they say that causes us to cast our vote for them. Especially when those words line up more and more with what we know they have done. Although we might just vote for them because of their party affiliation. I knew a man who was very very strong in his religious faith who was a staunch democrat. He told me that he would vote for “Black Bart” (meaning an unscrupulous character) if he was the Democratic candidate. He was not alone. Many Republicans are no different. Some voters have made their mind up before a candidate for their party announces their intention to run for office. Those voters don’t want to be confused with the facts, just like some of us when it is suggested we lose weight.
What are the lessons we can apply to losing our excess body fat? (I did not say weight. Excess fat is all you want to lose, you want and need most all the muscle you have.)
1. You have to decide to lose the fat. You have to set a goal to lose a certain amount, in a certain amount of time and do it by taking certain actions. You may not be ready when it is suggested you lose weight. You may think “I can’t - I have tried and it just won’t work for me.” You might think “I won’t - I look best at this weight. I am a big person, when I lose weight I look sick.” In each of those situations, you need to check your BMI and measure your relaxed waist at the belly button. It is the internal fat you want to remove although that is one of the last places you will lose it from. You need to become aware of the benefits of change. Make a list of those benefits. The links I provided are intended to help you do this.
2. Like a candidate, you need a plan. Your plan needs to be written and you need some expert help with your diet, your exercise and how you will apply the correct principles to your situation. I will link a class and upload the PDF discussion guide to a teleseminar I taught recently. You will hear one of the participants talk to me and one was online typing in information. They both felt their journals in which they had their goals, plans and notes on their progress were essential. Both were losing weight. The woman online, doing the typing has lost 25 pounds over the last 12-14 weeks.
3. Make a commitment. Tell other people about it. Candidates announce their intent in a situation surrounded by their backers, staff and most ardent supporters. Do the same, only tell people who will support you. There are toxic people out there. We discuss this situation in the class I provided the link to below. Avoid them until you get some momentum going.
4. Discipline yourself for the work. Organize your home and work place - remove temptation. These things are discussed in detail in my next 6 week course - Recipe to Look Better Naked. It is free and is on Thursday nights at 830PM eastern time. Can’t make it? Get the PDf and the mp3 recording and listen to it on your time - like when you exercise. Sign up on the right side of my blog.
5. Keep your talk positive. It will not be perfect but listen for the negative and correct it. Write down your negative thought on a 3×5 card or in your journal. Then on the back or below it write a positive response. When that negative thought arises, read your response. Keep your talk positive and you will act like what you say. Keep it negative and you will act that way also.

I couldn’t imagine what the tie-in to losing weight and the Presidential Candidates would be. Now, I see it’s all about the commitment. Good job making that analogy. We need commitment to lose weight, to get a better lifestyle, or to become pain-free. Hey, if Candidates Obama and McCain can do it, so can you and I!
