Breast Cancer - decrease your risk
The STATs on breast cancer are grim. One in eight women will be diagnosed in her lifetime. By the end of 2008 about 182,500 women will receive the diagnosis - You have breast cancer. 41,000 women will die of the disease each year.
The incidence of breast cancer decreased from 61 million in 2001 to 21 million in 2004 mainly because doctors quit prescribing hormones that raised the risk of cancer and heart attacks and strokes.
There is a huge factor within the complete control of the woman. That is her weight. Being over weight increases a woman’s risk of breast and other cancer during menopause. The more overweight you are the more your risk of breast cancer increases.
One study of 99,000 post menopausal women, none whom used hormones, showed that if they had gained 22 pounds since the age of 18, their risk of cancer was 30% higher than those who gained only 5 or less pounds. Studies have shown that those who are physically active have a lower risk of cancer. If you are still overweight, physical activity seems to lose it’s protective effect.
Bottom line, know your BMI. Get your weight into the normal range. Be active everyday. Pray for the cure! Do something about finding the cure, support research with your dollars.
