Avoid a Recession in Your Health

There are only two pieces of news right now. The BO news, not body odor, Barrack Obama!  The other is the R word – Recession!  With economic recession we hear words like unemployment, Less revenue, default, bankrupt and you can name a few I have missed on that list.  Some reporters using the heath metaphor, call the economy sick.  What then is a health recession?

An economic recession is when there is no economic progress for 6 months. There may even be negative growth which means we do without or we go into debt. If we apply this to our health, then a health recession would be a deterioration of our health status over 6 or more months.  No one wants this, but no one really wants to change either.  At least not a first.

Change comes when we see a greater benefit to  making the change than we do staying the same.  It takes effort to understand this and more effort to do something about it.  When people go on a “diet” they are changing the way they eat so their weight will change.  Usually they want to improve their appearance. The point is, it takes extra time and energy and after the “new” wears off, so does the motivation. Then it is good to have a relationship that you began at the start of your change so you can have a cheer leader or maybe even a coach to help you keep perspective and solve problems.

Sometimes, if people have had a health challenge, they become more serious about keeping what they have.  Some people can really bury their head in the sand to avoid dealing with it.  Like little children closing their eyes when they are afraid, some don’t want to confront what might hurt them.

To avoid this, know what you want most.  What is most important to you?  Get some good professional advice.
