Wellness Tip of the day #3
By
This tip is about hormones that are influenced by eating. The number one hormone you want to control through selecting your diet is insulin.
Insulin is stimulated by absorption of glucose from consumption of carbohydrates. It is directly related to controlling blood sugar by helping our muscles and brain cells get glucose from the blood into the individual cell.
It stimulates the liver to store fat and make cholesterol and triglycerides out of excess carbohydrate. Some experts have called insulin the ageing hormone! It may not actually be that but it can help our body injure itself when it is overstimulated by eating too much carbohydrate, especially fructose in the form of fruit juices, sports drinks and soda. Anything that contains starch to help a seedling grow contains the building blocks of glucose. The starches in a wheat seed or corn seed or other grain is loaded with nutrition intended to help a new plant grow until it can absorb nutrients from the soil and manufacture what it needs using sunlight.
I am not recommending you not eat carbohydrates but less of them are probably better for you. I would tell you to ask your doctor but unless he or she is much more qualified in nutrition than they were when they graduated from medical school, chances are they really do not know what to tell you and are not prepared to do more than tell you their opinion and give you a handout or send you to a dietitian. I don’t mind that unless the dietitian I talk to is 20 or more pounds overweight. Then I wonder how good that info will be. If I apply what I am told is that what will happen to me?
Read a lot on this topic. Pick a moderate viewpoint and don’t get attached. Keep records of what you eat and look at your progress. Is your cholesterol down? Is your weight ideal? Do you have enough muscle? Is your cardiac or HS-CRP above 2?
You can gauge how you are doing by some of those factors. The idea is to limit your insulin response to the least amount needed and to prevent big fluctuations in blood sugar by avoiding stimulating adrenalin and cortisol from drops in blood sugar caused by too much insulin response.
A book I recommend is this one
Carlson easy to read and understand. The chapters are short and informative on this subject.
