Sleep is essential to maintaining an ideal body weight. Without enough our weight will often increase. This is
doubly true if your BMI is above 35. The benefits of sleep are well documented and are not all completely understood. The one big benefit of enough sleep for losing and maintaining loss of excess body fat is the release of Human Growth Hormone. It is produced in a gland in our brain called the pituitary. Many people think it is the fountain of youth and buy injections of it as adults.
It is important in our recovery from exercise, in maintaining an ideal amount of body fat, and in growing and maintaining muscle mass. It is the muscles that have the most meatbolically active tissue and use the most energy. That is why on a limited time budget experts encouage you to do more resistance exercise and less cardio for weight loss.
Without enough sleep you will gain weight, shorten your life and affect your ability to think, reason and remember. How much do you need? It varies with your recovery time but schedule yourself 8-9 hours of darkness – lights out and your body will tell you how much. Want to know if you are geting enough? Assuming you are not eating losts of sugar and starchy carbohydrates your insulin level in the fasting state should be in the low normal range. Without enough sleep, your insulin level will remain high for reasons too long to go into here.
