Swine Flu – why all the FEAR

Swine flu – a type A Influenza – has surfaced in Mexico and in 20 people in the USA. There have been twenty confirmed deaths from swine flu in Mexico. The cases in the US have demonstrated the ability to transmit from person to person here.
The real worry is that no immunity exists to this illness in people in the United States or elsewhere. Officials here have 
expressed concern that some deaths may occur. With every flu season, deaths occur. Even after immunizing many people, some elderly, some with lung disease or other immune-deficiencies die. It is unfortunate but real. Everyone in the US have recovered and only one required hospitalization. This virus is sensitive to Tamiflu and Relenza, the preferred anti-influenza drugs available. Twenty percent of the nations stockpile of theses drugs, which costs billions of dollars, has been released to the states in preparation for a possible pandemic.
The World Health Organization has declared the threat of pandemic a phase 3 on a scale of one to six where six is the actual pandemic. The USA Surgeon General has declared a “Swine Flu” emergency.
The symptoms of flu are fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, body aches, head ache and fatigue. I often ask people if their eyes hurt or if their hair hurts. The virus penetrates muscle cells of the eye muscle and the muscle that raises the hair up when it stands on end. This is the reason even your hair or eyes hurt.
What should you do? Use your head, stay away from sick people. Don’t travel to Mexico. Get your symptoms checked if you have cough, fever, sore throat and body aches. Keep an eye on your county or state health website so that you can take appropriate precautions if the Swine flu is detected in your area.
