Dr. Robert Lustig, UCSF, discusses Sugar:The Bitter Truth
By
This is a one and one-half hour video that is free from UC San Francisco. It is part ot their mini-medical school for lay men. Dr. Lustig compares the Japanese diet to the Atkins diet and points out what they have in common. He talks about insulin! How too much sugar in the form of fructose and not eating enough fiber increase insulin and lead to weight gain. He does not believe in calories in/calories out theory and believes it is a mistake. He believes the macronutrient compo0sition of the diet makes a difference. Take the time to listen, it does load slowly. It is well worth the time to listen.

This lecture was about 1 part truth and 9 parts noise in the form of alarmism, cherry-picking and misinformation. A lot of holes in his arguments – not much time to dissent, but check out an honest and balanced review of Listig’s ramblings here. Lustig responded but was taken to task and has since disappeared (smart move – given he was outmatched by a long shot).

Mike, who ever you are, I can’t tell from the attached link or visiting your blog – I have to say I do agree with you — and the link you site to Alan Aragon’s blog post on this is terrific. Over consumption of too many calories and moving too little is a major problem. Most of our excess calories are in the form on liquids drunk as snacks and fructose is the primary fuel for those. I disagree, research or not that fructose supresses appetite in the people drinking these calories and becoming fat from them. The feed back mechanism becomes disconnected somehow and the more over weight we become, the more this seems to happen. The consumers of large amounts of fructose drinks have more than one variable affecting them. Lustig’s lecture then has some solid valid nutritional points though I have to agree that he alarms more than he provides solutions – certainly the medical community can not be relied upon to provide the nutritional solutions we need.
[...] In a recent blog post I embedded a 90 minute video produced at the medical school at UCSF. The video featured a lecture by a pediatric endocrinologist on staff there by the name of Dr. Robert Lustig M.D. Dr. Lustig is a specialist in the system of organs secreting hormones directly into the blood stream and he further specializes in problems in this system in children (pediatric endocrinologist). Diseases he would try to help are diseases of the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands and diabetes among others. [...]
