10. When I lifted weights at age 16, I really needed something heavy.  My friends and I went to an abandoned mine and knocked the wheels off of a mine car.  We mounted those wheels, 4 of them, 98 lbs. each, on an 8′ long, 11/4 ” thick steel bar.  We found some old weights with large holes in them and mounted them on the end.  It weighed 497 lbs.

My Dad was furious when he saw it.  We lived across the street from the Kiskiminetas River.  He was going to throw those wheels and the bar in that river!  One problem, he couldn’t lift one end with one hand to take off the plates and wheels.

I pulled on that thing until I could stand up straight with it.  Then I started lifting it one time, rest a minute and lift again.  I did 5 “repetitions” at a time and did them several times a day.  I built a strength, now long gone, that allowed me to do stiff-arm flags.

I have a different kind of strength now, one I can share with others.
