What is the number one cause of Death?

Posted by: Bruce Bair | Comments Comments Off

Would you avoid it if you could? Though this cause never appears on the death certificate, it is the underlying cause of each diagnosis. What is it?

INFLAMMATION!  If eating your favorite food or not eating a food you hate would stop inflammation in your body, would you change?  I think you would, trouble is no one will stick out their neck from the main stream and tell you what you should do.  In their defense it isn’t easy.  I try to cover some basic points during this hour long show like:

The definition of inflammation in our body.

Does lack of sleep contribute to inflammation?

How can diet help or hurt?

What about our life style?

What is DNA? – our genetic code – what makes us look the way we do and how our bodies do or don’t repair – depends on if the individual codes – genes – are open or silenced.  They can be silenced by methylation.  Methylation is a way molecules attach to our DNA to make it open and readable or closed and silent. It is good for a tumor gene to be silent, it is bad for a gene that tells cells not to become tumors to be silent. I hope you enjoy the presentation and that you will ask me lots of questions.

Cholesterol and Your Health – Ask an Expert

Posted by: Bruce Bair | Comments Comments Off

In this edition of Ask an Expert on Blog Talk Radio I answer questions about the blood fat that sparked a huge industry. One of Pfizer’s drugs for this problem was selling 4 billion dollars worth a year!
When you finish listening you should be able to answer these questions:
What is Cholesterol? Triglycerides? HDL? LDL?
How are they measured?
What do the numbers mean?
Should I take a medicine if my numbers are “high”?
When I take a medicine for my cholesterol, what happens?
What is APO B? How can measuring it benefit me?
Why doesn’t a low cholesterol diet lower my cholesterol?
What does sugar have to do with cholesterol?

It was news today that the US Attorney General is not going to prosecute users of medical marijuana if if is legal in the state where the user lives.  This is a major change in precedence.

It brings law enforcement on the state and local level into opposition with this policy. According to FBI statistics, in 2008 over 80% of all drug arrests were for possession.  45% of all drug arrests were for simple possession of marijuana.  Drug arrests totaled 1,702,537 and possession ofMedical Marijuana marijuana totaled 752,531.  That is a lot of money from fines, court costs and such.  That is a lot of police time and material used to do that job.  There were as many arrests for possession as there were for violent crime.  It would seem that the police go after easy targets – those possessing a small amount of an illegal substance – versus those committing serious crimes.   I guess it looks good. Arrests are up yet marijuana use according to Federal statistics is flat to trending down.  It would seem money and man power are being used to target non-violent crimes of little consequence.

I don’t want to put down police.  I am glad we have them.  I would like to see those finite resources used for better purposes.  What I know about marijuana shows that it is about the same as alcohol in its effect and duration.  Just like alcohol, it is subject to abuse.  Just as in the days of prohibition, lots of money is made that is untaxed, lots of resources are consumed with enforcement, and little progress is made. We have had a”war on drugs” but stats would show that the war is mainly on small consumers of drugs.

I think marijuana use should be legalized, taxed and regulated.  I think real facts about marijuana’s medical benefits and the real problems with use should be available. I do not think marijuana should be smoked for medical purposes. If THC, the active ingredient is what is needed it should be extracted and prescribed through a pharmacy.  I think it should be legal to do so and that prescribing it like many other drugs should require certain licenses or training on the part of the practitioner.

Do you think this is crazy?  What is your opinion?

I never did read the final version but a provision in the Economic Recovery Act created a Czar for EMR or electronic medical records within HHS. It gives the government access to every EMR so that they can look at medical actions i.e. treatments given to you by your doctor. The idea is quality assurance and how much your doctor will earn for treating you effectively.  There are lots of ramifications but here is one from “Cash for Clunkers” that I just became aware of and think the EMR provisions will be quite similar.

Here is an excerpt from the final bill referring to EMR’s, look at bold face around line 15-18.

You can get a copy in PDF form here appropriations.house.gov/pdf/RecoveryBill01-15-09.pdf

Stress – Beat it by discovering your Passion

Posted by: Bruce Bair | Comments Comments Off

Passion is something we associate with intimate activity between two people.  But, passion can also mean your joy in living and the energy that flows to you so abundantly that you attract people by what overflows from you.

manonmountain Stress Beat it by discovering your Passion

If you have arrived here from my article on stress and passion or from Twitter or Facebook – Welcome. Read on because the offer that brought you here is in the body of the article below.

Getting back to passion – it is what will get us up in the morning full of energy and it is what keeps us interested in what we are doing day after day.  Whether or not you live your passion is based upon your beliefs.  If you believe you can or if you believe you can’t you’re right. I did not originate that statement but I have probably said it more than the originator. I believe it also. You will reap what you sow and if you sow “I can not” you get “can not multiplied”.  If you sow “I can” then you get “I can” multiplied.

I want you to know more about passion, passionate living and meet a colleague of mine virtually. Her name is Paula Harvey. She is a transition coach and the founder of LifeAligned. LifeAligned is a service business that helps individuals and businesses align their goals and values with their passion.  I have a recorded interview I did with Paula recently. One suggestion Paula will make on the recording is that you have a passion party. Paula defines passion as the zest for living you have from living your purpose. It is released when you have no limiting beliefs.

I think you should have a Passion Party and you should also invite me to give you a free coaching workshop.  So, here is the offer -

Sign up to schedule a free coaching workshop (with me, Schedule Paula separately). During the 30 minute workshop I will help you understand one principle and demonstrate what my coaching can do for you. After I am done if you have arranged it, you can hire Paula Harvey to do her passion finding work shop as the chief entertainment for the party.  The sound will come though your computer and you can hook up your speakers so everyone can hear. It is also possible for each person to call in and listen by phone. She will send you some materials after you have made all the arrangements on her end and you will use those materials during her presentation. I will do something similar but mine will be free and hers will not.  Invite enough people and the cost is quite reasonable per person. If you sign up and pay before October 1, 2009, you will receive a 10% per person discount. Below this is a sign up form. Enter your name and email address then hit the big button. You will be sent a confirmation email to which you must reply so I can then send you the link. This step is necessary to assure you really did want the email with the link from me.

So, 1.Sign up. 2. Comfirm! 3. Receive your email. It will have instructions for what you need to do if you want Paula and I to do a “party” for you.

Good Calories vs Bad Calories

Posted by: Bruce Bair | Comments (2)

Feeling sickA technical book written by Gary Taubes, a scientific writer, Good Calories Bad Calories, challenges the idea that eating fat is evil and that exercise is not the answer to the obesity epidemic. The answer is complex but lies in controlling our hormones, especially insulin, adrenalin and cortisol.

One of the reasons kids may be so fat is that the mother was heavy when she became pregnant, gained lots of weight during preganancy- causing gestational diabetes – and exposed the fetus to lots of sugar during its growth in the womb.  This may trigger genetic traits to be expressed that make these children extra sensitive to carbohydrates with a high index and load.

Here are 3 respected experts on Larry King live in 2007,  Dr. Andrew Weil,

Dr. Mehmet Oz and Gary Taubes. Listen to what they have to say for 6 minutes..
